Resurfacing FAQs
What is resurfacing?
Resurfacing, often referred to as overlaying, is the process of applying a new layer of material, such as asphalt or tar and chip, over an existing pavement surface. This is a common method used to extend the life of a road, driveway, or parking lot without the need for complete reconstruction.
When is resurfacing and overlaying used?
Resurfacing and overlaying typically come into play when the underlying base of the pavement, driveway, car park, road, or anything else in between, remains structurally sound, but the surface has developed issues such as cracks, potholes, or other surface wear and tear.
What's the resurfacing process?
The resurfacing process varies to some degree, but the typical process includes:
- Clean up and repair. The existing surface is thoroughly cleaned and any major cosmetic damage, like big cracks or potholes, is repaired.
- Levelling. There are parts of the surface that might need to be levelled or milled (this is a process that removes the top layer of pavement to create a smooth, even surface).
- Applying New Surface. A new layer of paving material is then applied over the top.
- Compaction & Finishing. The new surface is then compacted to ensure it’s solid and smoothly integrated within the existing edges.
