We follow a multi-step process when it comes to laying gravel driveways for our clients. We first measure the area and discuss the right type of gravel for the job with the client. We’ll then remove any existing materials on the site, and excavate to the depth required (usually about 30cm) in order to get in the base layer and top layer of gravel before planning for drainage.

We’ll then lay the foundation by compacting the subsoil and preparing it before adding the base layer consisting of larger crushed stone before compacting again. After this, there’s an optional middle later, and then we evenly spread the top layer of gravel on top.

Overall, it’s a labour-intensive process and lots can go wrong, which is why it’s always better and more cost-effective to get professionals in to do it rather than doing it yourself.

Although it varies widely, loose gravel driveway tends to be a cost effective option for residential driveways.

Material costs for a gravel driveway might range from £45 to £85 per ton. Each ton covers roughly 15 to 20 square meters at a depth of 40mm (which is recommended for driveways). Including installation, homeowners might expect to pay anywhere from £30 to £60 per square meter for a complete gravel driveway. This includes preparation, materials, and labour.

Yes, you can gravel a sloped driveway, but there are some things to consider that will pay off massively in the long run.

First off, ensure that you go for angular gravel with sharp edges rather than rounded gravel. This is because it locks together better and provides better traction and stability, preventing gravel from shifting downhill.

Drainage becomes all the more important on a slope as well, since you’ll want to prevent water from washing your gravel down the hill – we can assist with this during our site visit.

Strong and durable edging is another thing that will be key to help contain the gravel and prevent displacement over time.

Gravel can be a good option for a sloped driveway if you take the necessary steps to ensure proper installation and commit to ongoing maintenance. If this seems a bit too demanding, you could try other more stable surfacing options like asphalt or tar and chip, albeit at a higher initial cost.

In terms of adding value to your property, gravel is a good option. You won’t spend an arm and a leg on it, there aren’t any worries about durability and it can be aesthetically pleasing to buyers. Arguably the best thing about it is that it’s easy to add another material on top at any point should you want to change things up later on.

Gravel tends to be one of the most cost-effective options when it comes to straight up installation, but the costs can start to stack up due to the more regular weeding and maintenance needed when compared to other surfacing options.
