Tar & Chip Explained
Tar and chip or spray tar and chip as it is also known as is an excellent way to extend the lifetime of your driveway. We use 3 different types of hot surface dressing emulsion and will advise which we feel would be best suited to your requirements.
A choice of natural stone (chippings) are available in both 6mm and 10mm including the more robust granite chippings as used on many council roads throughout the country. Once the hot surface dressing emulsion has been applied the chippings are spread and compacted. The tar and chip finish provides both a natural & traditional look and also remains extremely cost effective. Once your new tar and chip driveway has been laid maintenance is very easy, all that’s required is a gentle brush over the chippings and it’ll look as good as the day it was first completed.
After a few years the tar and chip process can easily be repeated at a fraction of the cost to initially install your new driveway, traffic volume ultimately determines the life span of any driveway or roadway.
Tarmac or Asphalt Explained
Tarmac or Asphalt can provide a very hard wearing surface for driveways, roads, carparks and paths.
Although predominantly laid for areas expecting higher volumes of traffic, tarmac or asphalt is another great option to finish your driveway and with the option of spreading decorative chippings into the surface to add some colour to your driveway.
Maintenance of a tarmac or asphalt driveway is low, just a sweep from time to time and you can also pressure wash too.
Resin Bound Surfacing
Resin bound surfacing is becoming more and more popular. Its major advantage over other surfaces being its 15-20 years lifespan (depending on the elements of course).
It is also 100% porous (self drainage) meaning no other drainage is required. The surface is also anti-slip, wheelchair friendly and easy maintenance too! A simple sweep from time to time or pressure wash will suffice.
The process itself involves a full excavation of the area, your choice of edgings would be installed, the geotextile membrane is then installed, next the type 3 sub base is installed 150mm approx, followed by the edging being installed, the base is installed which consists of 10mm open graded porous tarmac 50mm approx, and finally 18mm lay of UVA resin.
